Inside and outside blend effortlessly in this beach room, which can be closed off or opened completely to the elements. The pool with fountain connects the space to the horizon, even when enclosed by louvered doors that control sunlight and provide privacy from the busy boardwalk and bike path.

A pool is enhanced by a fireplace, a landscaped alcove and a waterfall.

High above public view, a system of sliding glass doors opens the Master Bedroom to the beach and Pacific beyond.

The main entry is on the middle level of this home. The adjoining upper and lower levels are tied together around a daylit garden. The space features an artist-commissioned fountain made from a granite boulder.

Respectful of its midcentury residential neighborhood, the largely opaque front and sides of the house provide privacy and a stark contrast to a back elevation of glass and steel.

TO RE-IGNITE THE ESTATE'S CLASSIC BONES, SHE USED A THOUGHTFULLY CURATED COLLECTION OF VINTAGE FURNITURE, LUXURY OBJECTS - TO CREATE IMPRESSION, AND FINISHES.

TO CREATE A RICH, WELL-TRAVELED LOOK, MOORISH CHAIRS, ANTIQUE KHOTAN RUGS, HAND-PAINTED WALL COVERINGS, AND MILLWORK IN DRY BRUSH FINISHES AND HAD-CARVED CABINETRY WERE USED. THE COLOR SCHEME INCLUDED SHADES OF EGGPLANT, VERMILLION AND PAPAYA WITH TOUCHES OF BRASS TO PLAY OFF THE OUTDOOR GREENERY THAT WAS VISIBLE FROM THE HOME'S PLENTIFUL FLOOR-TO-CEILING WINDOWS.

After travelling the world and residing in various countries, the client returned to Melbourne and wanted to create a home that is both inviting and luxurious, equally suitable for relaxing and entertaining. The apartment is in an iconic Melbourne building on the famous tree-lined boulevard of St Kilda Road. Originally two apartments, the space has been recreated into a luxurious penthouse, providing 180 degree views over Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay beyond.

HBA designers set out to create a neutral and elegant backdrop for the client’s diverse collection of art and artefacts.
